Day 11: Koh Ker and Beng Mealea temple by Jeep

Following breakfast, we meet our guide and jeep driver for a 7.30am start our guide and jeep driver. We drive in an originalM151 MUTT Jeep from the 1970's.

Drive 2 hours to Koh Ker temple, which is situated in the northeast of Siem Reap. The site represents the remnants of the capital of the Khmer Empire from 928 AD. – 944 A.D. a very unique period in the age of Angkor. Visit Prasat Chhin, Prasat Thom, Prasat Ling, Prasat Thneng, Linga Shrine, and Prasat Damrei.

After lunch in a local restaurant, we continue to Beng Mealea. We drive past bean and banana farms and rubber plantations. We will visit the Quarry where they still dig the sandstone to repair some ruined in temples.

We visit Beng Mealea, which is almost the same size as Angkor Wat but reclaimed by nature a millennium after it was first built. This ruined temple is special because it's one of the temples that has been left to be naturally reclaimed by the jungle unlike most of the other temples which were restored by the French in the 1800s after centuries of neglect.

Returning to Siem Reap we stop near the Old Market of Siem Reap to visit Artisans d'Angkor. The centre provides an insight to the amazing skilled craftsmanship required for Cambodian traditional handicrafts. Originally established as an association by Chantiers-Ecoles, Artisans d’Angkor has grown to be a self-financed company today, having trained young Cambodians in recreating the arts of their cultural heritage and at the same time offering them the opportunity to earn an income for their families.

Enjoy a guided tour of the art centre. We first visit the impressive stone carvings at the courtyard of Artisans d’Angkor. There are Linga-Yoni structure, lion statue, 4-face Buddha and the elephant deity of Ganesha. Next, we proceed to see the traditional Cambodian arts of wood and stone carvings. In wood carving, the majority of the wood used is rubber tree lumber. The art of stone carving dates back to the glorious Khmer empire with the finest examples being displayed in all Angkorian temples. As in all Angkorian temples, stone carving is mostly done on sandstone.

Then we move to the lacquer area. Lacquer had been used to protect wood since 1,000 years ago in Cambodia. The carved wood and stone are decorated with lacquer in order to smooth out the surface before colors are applied. They are then ornamented with copper leaf gilding.

The last section of our visit is the silk painting. In here, the silk is set on a frame of predetermined size before the motifs are drawn on it. Colors are then applied to the motifs and the finishing is done with a paintbrush.

If you wish to support to the artists, you can help by purchasing their products at their retail shop, which is within the compound of Artisans d’Angkor. It features wood and stone carvings, lacquer wares and silk items from Artisans d’Angkor.

Drive to your hotel and the rest of the day is yours to relax. Overnight in Siem Reap
