Depart early in the morning from Saigon and head 2 hours to the southwest, along the way notice lush rice paddies and fruit farms emerging alongside the highway. Upon arrival in Cai Lay, board a charming wooden boat to enjoy countryside scenery and river life. Then stretch your legs a bit and hop on a bicycle for 30km (over easy, level terrain) along narrow village lanes, past fruit orchards and local cottage industries. Locals will often greet you with a hello or “xin chao” as you pedal by. Arrive at the home of a tropical fruit farmer and have a walk around his tropical fruit orchard. Enjoy the opportunity to taste fresh fruits. Then relax while enjoying the view from a small sampan boat as you are paddled slowly along tropical canals. Leave the boat and walk through this Mekong village to a local home and enjoy a home-hosted lunch of Mekong Delta specialties. Keep riding to a garden house where you will spend the night with a friendly family. Opt to wander to the surrounding areas or have a little chat with the hosts for a better understanding of agriculture river life. This evening, help the family to prepare traditional dessert dishes before savoring an authentic home-style dinner. Overnight at the homestay in Cai Lay.
(Note: the bedding and mosquito net may be not as luxurious as a hotel; however, this is a great way to get in tune with nature and to experience life in the Mekong Delta)
