Adventure Tours in Borneo

Embrace the Extraordinary in Borneo.

Borneo

The island of Borneo is divided between Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei, and is home to some of the world’s best diving sites, along with an enormous variety of plants, birds, and mammals, many unique to the island.

With the ongoing threat of deforestation, ecotourism is one of few economic activities that can make a convincing case for protecting these habitats while supporting local communities.

Split between the Nation of Brunei, Kalimantan, Indonesia and the two Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, Borneo is brimming with uniqueness.

Borneo: Unleash Your Wild Side.

Both Malaysian states are known for their jungles and sandy white beaches, as well as more developed cities compared to the rest of Borneo. Kalimantan encapsulates the remainder and largest section of Borneo.

Dense rainforest, dirt roads, rivers, tributaries and hundreds of exotic flora and fauna are located at every thrilling turn. While Brunei and Malaysia are more tourist-friendly, Kalimantan is best explored with a tour guide and will leave an indelible impression on any adventure tourist’s mind.

If you want to get a good overview of Borneo, then two weeks should give you enough time to see the main highlights which include the most popular beaches, national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and a visit to Kota Kinabalu.

Having said that, you might only need a few days to explore a few national parks and move on to your next destination. It all really depends on what you want to see and do in Borneo.

What are the best months to visit Borneo?

The best time to visit Borneo largely depends on the region and your interests, as the climate varies across the island. Generally, the drier months from March to October are considered optimal for travel. During this period, temperatures hover around a comfortable 27-32°C (81-90°F), and the reduced rainfall enhances wildlife spotting opportunities, especially in places like the Kinabatangan River and Danum Valley.

In Sabah, the northeastern monsoon brings heavier rains from October to February, which might impact outdoor activities. However, the lush greenery and cooler temperatures during this period offer a different, serene beauty.

The southwestern region of Kalimantan tends to have a more equatorial climate, with high humidity and rainfall throughout the year. Nevertheless, the relatively drier period from May to September offers better travel conditions.

It's important to note that Borneo's climate is tropical, meaning it can rain even during the drier months. Therefore, it's always a good idea to pack for possible rain showers regardless of when you plan your visit.

Why do tourists visit Borneo?

Tourists are drawn to Borneo for its incredibly rich biodiversity, unique cultural experiences, and thrilling outdoor adventures. Known as one of the world's most significant habitats for wildlife, Borneo is home to a myriad of species, including the endangered orangutan, proboscis monkey, and pygmy elephant. The island's extensive rainforests, rivers, mountains, and caves offer a natural playground for activities like trekking, wildlife spotting, river cruising, and caving.

Borneo is also a culturally diverse region with numerous indigenous groups, each with its own unique customs, traditions, and languages. Visitors get to learn about these fascinating cultures through homestays, craft workshops, and local festivals.

Borneo's stunning landscapes, from the peaks of Mount Kinabalu to the coral reefs of Sipadan, make it a dream destination for marine activities like diving and snorkeling. Despite its growing popularity, much of Borneo still remains off-the-beaten-track, providing a unique and authentic travel experience.
