A remote and stunningly beautiful, but also challenging trek deep into the territory of the Daai people, who inhabit the remote mountains in the far southwestern Mindat and adjacent Matupi district. In these remote mountains, between 1000 and 2500 meter altitude, on winding paths and trails you will discover remote mountain villages, have unforgettable encounters with the local communities, see a lot of beautiful nature, spectacular mountain sceneries, wild rivers … far off the tourist trails around Mindat and Mount Victoria.

Day 1: Bagan – Mindat – Trekking to village (1)

Early morning departure from Bagan. You will arrive in Mindat by private car and will be greeted by your guide and his team. After a quick lunch at a local restaurant, you will be transferred to the starting point of the trek, about 40 kilometers from town, at an altitude of over 2400 meters, with amazing views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. After an easy 2 hour trek downhill, you will reach a big village by sunset, which even has its own waterfall (size depending on season). The guides will prepare a delicious local dinner for you, overnight at a village house.

Trekking distance: 6 kilometres, approx. 2 hours

Meal: Lunch, Dinner

Day 2: Village trekking (2 & 3)

Awake very early, as the locals do, and explore the village in the morning light, our trek will begin after breakfast. Crossing a very long suspension bridge, you will reach a significant village around noon, where a freshly prepared lunch will be waiting for you. From this village you can enjoy great views and will be able to see several villages that will be visited during the next days. Afternoon is an enjoyable hike downhill, expect to see many Mithun’s (Chin buffaloes) on the way. You will cross a bridge at the confluence of 3 small streams, the perfect place for a refreshing dip in the cool waters! Only 30 minutes later you will reach a large village, where the catholic priest is a good friend of ours and speaks excellent English. He will be able to answer many of your questions regarding everyday life, old traditions and religion in these remote mountains. Dinner and overnight at a local village house.

Trekking distance: 20 kilometres, approx. 7-8 hours trek

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Village trekking (4 & 5)

Again, we recommend to get up early and stroll through the beautiful village. After breakfast, we use an old hunters trail as a shortcut to the next village, which splits into an old village and a new village, we’ll be having lunch at the new village, which is higher up the mountain and affords the best views. In the afternoon an easy up-and-down for 3 around hours, through forests and fields, with fantastic views of the surrounding mountains and villages, until we reach a further village, probably the most remote village all we visit on our trek. Dinner and overnight at the village headman’s house.

Trekking distance: 20 kilometres, approx. 8 hours trek

Meals:  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4: Village trekking (6 & 7)

Today’s route will be quite remote, with not many villages on the way, but stunning in nature (mountain jungle) and views. Only in the morning, after 2 hours of trekking, we will reach a significant village, our lunch for the day is a picnic lunch wrapped in a banana leaf, high up on the mountain. We reach the big, new village in the afternoon, so there will be time to stroll around the village and make friends with the locals – if the season is right, you can also help them in the fields, a great experience. Dinner and overnight again at the village headman’s house.

Trekking distance: 15 kilometres, approx. 6 hours trek

Meals:  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5: Village trekking (8) – Back to Mindat

The last day of trekking has come, a last challenge will be waiting for you, as it’s quite a distance to cover until you’re back to civilization. Walking down into the valley, we cross a river on an old suspension bridge, a good time for a refreshing dip, later undertake a steady, long, but not too steep ascent to the last village, on the way you usually see lots of Mithun’s again. Lunch will be served in the village, from there it’s another 2 hours uphill with fantastic views back into the mountains, until you reach the point where you started the trek on day one. A car will be waiting for you and you’ll be transferred back to Mindat – incase she’s still healthy and fit, a visit to the famous old noseflute lady is a must, before you’ll be dropped at your guesthouse, where a hot shower and soft beds are waiting. Dinner in Mindat at your own expense.

Trekking distance: 20 kilometres, 7-8 hours trek

Meals:  Breakfast, Lunch

Day 6: Mindat departure

In the early morning, after breakfast at your guesthouse, visit the lively market in Mindat, a great place to buy traditional Chin weavings or Chin knives and baskets as souvenir. Between 8 and 9am it’s time to get on the car and say goodbye to beautiful Chin state, early afternoon you’ll be back in Bagan (private car) – with the head and heart full of unforgettable memories and impressions, and the strong desire to return to chin state as soon as possible.
